The Stiff-Necked will Be Destroyed

､ אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

The man ､

תּ֭וֹכָחוֹת

tō·w·ḵā·ḥō·wṯ

who is [often] rebuked

מַקְשֶׁה־

maq·šeh-

､ עֹ֑רֶף

‘ō·rep̄;

[his] neck ､

פֶּ֥תַע

pe·ṯa‘

､ יִ֝שָּׁבֵ֗ר

yiš·šā·ḇêr,

will be destroyed ､

וְאֵ֣ין

wə·’ên

. מַרְפֵּֽא׃

mar·pê.

､ בִּרְב֣וֹת

bir·ḇō·wṯ

When are in authority ､

צַ֭דִּיקִים

ṣad·dî·qîm

､ יִשְׂמַ֣ח

yiś·maḥ

הָעָ֑ם

hā·‘ām;

､ וּבִמְשֹׁ֥ל

ū·ḇim·šōl

but when rules ､

רָ֝שָׁ֗ע

rā·šā‘,

יֵאָ֥נַֽח

yê·’ā·naḥ

. עָֽם׃

‘ām.

the people .

אִֽישׁ־

’îš-

אֹהֵ֣ב

’ō·hêḇ

חָ֭כְמָה

ḥāḵ·māh

יְשַׂמַּ֣ח

yə·śam·maḥ

– אָבִ֑יו

’ā·ḇîw;

וְרֹעֶ֥ה

wə·rō·‘eh

but a companion

ז֝וֹנ֗וֹת

zō·w·nō·wṯ,

יְאַבֶּד־

yə·’ab·beḏ-

. הֽוֹן׃

hō·wn.

מֶ֗לֶךְ

me·leḵ,

The king

בְּ֭מִשְׁפָּט

bə·miš·pāṭ

יַעֲמִ֣יד

ya·‘ă·mîḏ

– אָ֑רֶץ

’ā·reṣ;

the land –

וְאִ֖ישׁ

wə·’îš

but the man

תְּרוּמ֣וֹת

tə·rū·mō·wṯ

who [receives] bribes

. יֶֽהֶרְסֶֽנָּה׃

ye·her·sen·nāh.

overthrows it .

גֶּ֭בֶר

ge·ḇer

מַחֲלִ֣יק

ma·ḥă·lîq

עַל־

‘al-

on

רֵעֵ֑הוּ

rê·‘ê·hū;

רֶ֝֗שֶׁת

re·šeṯ,

פּוֹרֵ֥שׂ

pō·w·rêś

עַל־

‘al-

. פְּעָמָֽיו׃

pə·‘ā·māw.

בְּפֶ֤שַֽׁע

bə·p̄e·ša‘

By transgression

אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

an man

רָ֣ע

rā‘

､ מוֹקֵ֑שׁ

mō·w·qêš;

is snared ､

וְ֝צַדִּ֗יק

wə·ṣad·dîq,

but the righteous

יָר֥וּן

yā·rūn

. וְשָׂמֵֽחַ׃

wə·śā·mê·aḥ.

יֹדֵ֣עַ

yō·ḏê·a‘

צַ֭דִּיק

ṣad·dîq

דִּ֣ין

dîn

､ דַּלִּ֑ים

dal·lîm;

of the poor ､

רָ֝שָׁ֗ע

rā·šā‘,

[But] the wicked

לֹא־

lō-

not

יָבִ֥ין

yā·ḇîn

does understand

. דָּֽעַת׃

dā·‘aṯ.

[such] knowledge .

אַנְשֵׁ֣י

’an·šê

לָ֭צוֹן

lā·ṣō·wn

יָפִ֣יחוּ

yā·p̄î·ḥū

– קִרְיָ֑ה

qir·yāh;

a city –

וַ֝חֲכָמִ֗ים

wa·ḥă·ḵā·mîm,

but wise [men]

יָשִׁ֥יבוּ

yā·šî·ḇū

. אָֽף׃

’āp̄.

אִֽישׁ־

’îš-

[If] a man

חָכָ֗ם

ḥā·ḵām,

נִ֭שְׁפָּט

niš·pāṭ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

with

､ אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

a man ､

אֱוִ֑יל

’ĕ·wîl;

וְרָגַ֥ז

wə·rā·ḡaz

and Whether [the fool] rages

､ וְ֝שָׂחַ֗ק

wə·śā·ḥaq,

or laughs ､

וְאֵ֣ין

wə·’ên

and [there is] no

. נָֽחַת׃

nā·ḥaṯ.

אַנְשֵׁ֣י

’an·šê

דָ֭מִים

ḏā·mîm

the bloodthirsty

יִשְׂנְאוּ־

yiś·nə·’ū-

､ תָ֑ם

ṯām;

the blameless ､

וִֽ֝ישָׁרִ֗ים

wî·šā·rîm,

but the upright

יְבַקְשׁ֥וּ

yə·ḇaq·šū

. נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃

nap̄·šōw.

his well-being .

כָּל־

kāl-

､ ר֭וּחוֹ

rū·ḥōw

his feelings ､

יוֹצִ֣יא

yō·w·ṣî

כְסִ֑יל

ḵə·sîl;

וְ֝חָכָ֗ם

wə·ḥā·ḵām,

but a wise [man]

בְּאָח֥וֹר

bə·’ā·ḥō·wr

until afterwards

. יְשַׁבְּחֶֽנָּה׃

yə·šab·bə·ḥen·nāh.

holds them back .

מֹ֭שֵׁל

mō·šêl

If a ruler

מַקְשִׁ֣יב

maq·šîḇ

עַל־

‘al-

to

דְּבַר־

də·ḇar-

､ שָׁ֑קֶר

šā·qer;

lies ､

כָּֽל־

kāl-

מְשָׁרְתָ֥יו

mə·šā·rə·ṯāw

his servants [become]

. רְשָׁעִֽים׃

rə·šā·‘îm.

רָ֤שׁ

rāš

The poor [man]

וְאִ֣ישׁ

wə·’îš

and the

תְּכָכִ֣ים

tə·ḵā·ḵîm

– נִפְגָּ֑שׁוּ

nip̄·gā·šū;

have this in common –

מֵ֤אִיר־

mê·’îr-

עֵינֵ֖י

‘ê·nê

the eyes

שְׁנֵיהֶ֣ם

šə·nê·hem

of the two of them

. יְהוָֽה׃

Yah·weh.

מֶ֤לֶךְ

me·leḵ

The king

שׁוֹפֵ֣ט

šō·w·p̄êṭ

בֶּֽאֱמֶ֣ת

be·’ĕ·meṯ

with truth

､ דַּלִּ֑ים

dal·lîm;

the poor ､

כִּ֝סְא֗וֹ

kis·’ōw,

לָעַ֥ד

lā·‘aḏ

. יִכּֽוֹן׃

yik·kō·wn.

will be established .

שֵׁ֣בֶט

šê·ḇeṭ

The rod

וְ֭תוֹכַחַת

wə·ṯō·w·ḵa·ḥaṯ

יִתֵּ֣ן

yit·tên

､ חָכְמָ֑ה

ḥāḵ·māh

וְנַ֥עַר

wə·na·‘ar

but a child

מְ֝שֻׁלָּ֗ח

mə·šul·lāḥ,

left [to himself]

מֵבִ֥ישׁ

mê·ḇîš

brings shame to

. אִמּֽוֹ׃

’im·mōw.

､ בִּרְב֣וֹת

bir·ḇō·wṯ

When are multiplied ､

רְ֭שָׁעִים

rə·šā·‘îm

– יִרְבֶּה־

yir·beh-

פָּ֑שַׁע

pā·ša‘;

וְ֝צַדִּיקִ֗ים

wə·ṣad·dî·qîm,

but the righteous

בְּֽמַפַּלְתָּ֥ם

bə·map·pal·tām

. יִרְאֽוּ׃

yir·’ū.

will see .

יַסֵּ֣ר

yas·sêr

､ בִּ֭נְךָ

bin·ḵā

– וִֽינִיחֶ֑ךָ

wî·nî·ḥe·ḵā;

and he will give you rest –

וְיִתֵּ֖ן

wə·yit·tên

and Yes he will give

מַעֲדַנִּ֣ים

ma·‘ă·ḏan·nîm

. לְנַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃

lə·nap̄·še·ḵā.

בְּאֵ֣ין

bə·’ên

Where [there is] no

､ חָ֭זוֹן

ḥā·zō·wn

､ יִפָּ֣רַֽע

yip·pā·ra‘

cast off restraint ､

עָ֑ם

‘ām;

וְשֹׁמֵ֖ר

wə·šō·mêr

､ תּוֹרָ֣ה

tō·w·rāh

the law ､

. אַשְׁרֵֽהוּ׃

’aš·rê·hū.

happy [is] he .

– בִּ֭דְבָרִים

biḏ·ḇā·rîm

By [mere] words –

לֹא־

lō-

not

יִוָּ֣סֶר

yiw·wā·ser

will be corrected

עָ֑בֶד

‘ā·ḇeḏ;

כִּֽי־

kî-

יָ֝בִ֗ין

yā·ḇîn,

וְאֵ֣ין

wə·’ên

and not

. מַעֲנֶֽה׃

ma·‘ă·neh.

he will respond .

חָזִ֗יתָ

ḥā·zî·ṯā,

אִ֭ישׁ

’îš

אָ֣ץ

’āṣ

؟ בִּדְבָרָ֑יו

biḏ·ḇā·rāw;

in his words ؟

תִּקְוָ֖ה

tiq·wāh

[There is] more hope

לִכְסִ֣יל

liḵ·sîl

. מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃

mim·men·nū.

מְפַנֵּ֣ק

mə·p̄an·nêq

מִנֹּ֣עַר

min·nō·‘ar

עַבְדּ֑וֹ

‘aḇ·dōw;

וְ֝אַחֲרִית֗וֹ

wə·’a·ḥă·rî·ṯōw,

and in the end

יִהְיֶ֥ה

yih·yeh

. מָנֽוֹן׃

mā·nō·wn.

as a son .

אִֽישׁ־

’îš-

An man

אַ֭ף

’ap̄

יְגָרֶ֣ה

yə·ḡā·reh

､ מָד֑וֹן

mā·ḏō·wn;

וּבַ֖עַל

ū·ḇa·‘al

and a man

חֵמָ֣ה

ḥê·māh

רַב־

raḇ-

. פָּֽשַׁע׃

pā·ša‘.

transgression .

גַּאֲוַ֣ת

ga·’ă·waṯ

אָ֭דָם

’ā·ḏām

of man

– תַּשְׁפִּילֶ֑נּוּ

taš·pî·len·nū;

will bring him low –

וּשְׁפַל־

ū·šə·p̄al-

but the humble in

ר֝֗וּחַ

rū·aḥ,

יִתְמֹ֥ךְ

yiṯ·mōḵ

. כָּבֽוֹד׃

kā·ḇō·wḏ.

חוֹלֵ֣ק

ḥō·w·lêq

Whoever is a partner

עִם־

‘im-

with

גַּ֭נָּב

gan·nāḇ

שׂוֹנֵ֣א

śō·w·nê

– נַפְשׁ֑וֹ

nap̄·šōw;

his own life –

､ אָלָ֥ה

’ā·lāh

an oath ､

יִ֝שְׁמַ֗ע

yiš·ma‘,

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

. יַגִּֽיד׃

yag·gîḏ.

חֶרְדַּ֣ת

ḥer·daṯ

The fear

אָ֭דָם

’ā·ḏām

of man

יִתֵּ֣ן

yit·tên

､ מוֹקֵ֑שׁ

mō·w·qêš;

a snare ､

וּבוֹטֵ֖חַ

ū·ḇō·w·ṭê·aḥ

but whoever trusts

בַּיהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

. יְשֻׂגָּֽב׃

yə·śug·gāḇ.

shall be safe .

רַ֭בִּים

rab·bîm

מְבַקְשִׁ֣ים

mə·ḇaq·šîm

– פְּנֵי־

pə·nê-

the favor –

מוֹשֵׁ֑ל

mō·wō·šêl;

וּ֝מֵיְהוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

but from Yahweh

מִשְׁפַּט־

miš·paṭ-

justice [comes]

. אִֽישׁ׃

’îš.

תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת

tō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ

､ צַ֭דִּיקִים

ṣad·dî·qîm

to the righteous ､

אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

An man [is]

עָ֑וֶל

‘ā·wel;

וְתוֹעֲבַ֖ת

wə·ṯō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ

and an abomination

. רָשָׁ֣ע

rā·šā‘

to the wicked .

יְשַׁר־

yə·šar-

[he who is] upright [is]

. דָּֽרֶךְ׃

dā·reḵ.

in the way .
