13 Bible Verses about Adultery

Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought to him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, they said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such. What do you say?"

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.'

And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery."

He said to him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "'You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness,

Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not covet," and any other commandment there may be, are summed up in this sentence, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery."

"It has also been said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to become an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

So he said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."

Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.

Do you not know, brethrenfor I am speaking to those who know the lawthat the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives? For a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of her husband. So then, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and though she marries another man, she is not an adulteress.

For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."

For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife; because he had married her. For John had said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."

But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the other evil things Herod had done,

Jesus straightened up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you; go, and sin no more."

Now this I affirm and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds, they are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to the hardness of their heart; and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality, greedy for the practice of every kind of impurity.

For you have spent enough time in the past doing what the Gentiles like to do, living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry.

But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

For a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of her husband. So then, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and though she marries another man, she is not an adulteress.

The woman answered, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly."

It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among pagans: a man has his father's wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to have mourned? Let the one who has done this be removed from your midst.
