And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity, the sea and the waves roring: and men ready to die for fear and apprehension of the things that are coming upon the land; for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
And they alarmed the people, and the rulers of the city upon hearing these things:
Some therefore cried one thing, and some another; for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they were come together.
For the doctrine of the cross is to them, that perish, foolishness: but to us, who are saved, it is the power of God.
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
And if our gospel also be veiled, it is to those that perish; among whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of the unbelieving, so that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, doth not shine unto them:
The Jews therefore cavilled amongst themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
And when this rumor was spread, the multitude came together and were astonished; for every one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were all amazed and wondered, saying to one another, Behold, are not all these, that are speaking, Galileans?
and all the multitudes were amazed, and said, "Is not this the Son of David?" which the pharisees hearing, said, "He only casts out demons by the help of Beelzebub the prince of the devils."
And the scribes that came down from Jerusalem said, He is in league with Beelzebub, and casts out demons by the help of the prince of demons.
Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all the things that were done by Him; and was perplexed, because it was said by some that John was risen from the dead; and by some that Elias had appeared; and by others, that one of the ancient prophets was risen again. And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? and he wanted to see Him.
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus, and said to his servants, This is John the baptist, he is certainly risen from the dead, and therefore miraculous things are done by him:
And king Herod heard of Him, (for his name was spread abroad,) and he said, John the baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore miraculous powers appear in him. Others said, it is Elias: and others said, it is a prophet, or like one of the prophets. But when Herod heard of Him, he said, it is John whom I beheaded, he is risen from the dead.
Nicodemus saith unto Him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
And they were all amazed and in doubt, saying one to another, What can this mean?
for unto this day the same veil remaineth unremoved in the reading of the old testament, which veil is taken away in Christ.
And the men wondered, saying, What an amazing person is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him!
And they were exceedingly afraid, and said to one another, Who is this? that even the wind and the sea obey Him?
And He said unto them, Where is your faith? But they were struck with awe and amazement, and said one to another, who is this? for He commandeth even the winds and the sea, and they obey Him.
Take heed therefore to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the holy Spirit hath appointed you bishops, to feed the church of God, which He purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departure grievous wolves will enter in among you, not sparing the flock. And from among yourselves shall men arise, speaking perverse things to draw away disciples after them.
but to be gentle towards all men, ready to teach, patient under injuries, with meekness instructing those of different sentiments, not knowing but God may give them repentance to the acknowledgement of the truth;
preach the word, be instant both in season and out of season; convince, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and instruction. For the time will come, when they will not bear sound doctrine; but having itching ears, will heap up to themselves teachers after their own hearts:
Be ruled by those that are your guides, and submit to them: for they watch for your souls; (as those that must give an account) that they may do it with joy and not with uneasiness: for this were unprofitable for you.
and is profitable for doctrine, for conviction, for correction, for instruction in righteousness;
till we all arrive in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, at perfect maturity, even to the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. That we may be no longer children fluctuating and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the artful insinuations of men, and their crafty methods of deceiving;
And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all discernment; that ye may try things that differ, that ye may be sincere and without offence until the day of Christ;
but firm food is for persons come to age, who by habit have their senses exercised to a discernment both of good and evil.
Then said Peter to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: let us make three tabernacles; one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: for he knew not what to say, for they were sore afraid.
Then Peter said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou pleasest, let us make three tabernacles here, one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
And as they were departing from Him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here, let us make three tabernacles, one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. And as he was saying this, there came a cloud and overshadowed them; and they were afraid, when they went up into the cloud and disappeared.
And they hasted out and fled from the sepulchre; for they were seized with trembling and amazement: neither said they any thing to any one; for they were afraid.
And indeed some women of our company much surprised us: who having been early at the sepulchre, and not finding his body there, came and said likewise that they had seen a vision of angels, who said He was alive. And He said unto them, O people void of understanding and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.
Many therefore of his disciples, when they heard Him, said, This discourse is hard to be understood, who can take it in?
Some of his disciples therefore said one to another, What is the meaning of this that He saith to us, A little while and ye shall not see me, and again a little while and ye shall see me, and---because I am going to the Father? they said therefore, What is this little while that He speaks of? we do not understand what He means. Now Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him, and therefore said unto them, Are ye enquiring among each other about this, that I said, A little while and ye shall not see me, and again a little while and ye shall see me?
For when we came into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were afflicted on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.
My little children, of whom I do as it were travail in birth again, till Christ be formed in you, I should be glad to be present with you even now, and to change my voice; for I am in doubt about you.
I wonder that ye are so soon removed from him who called you by the grace of Christ to another gospel: which is not another; but there be some that disturb you, and would subvert the gospel of Christ.
But now that ye know God, or rather are known by God, how is it that ye turn again to the poor weak elements, to which ye desire again to be in bondage as before?
that ye will not think otherwise: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgement, whosoever he be.
And if any of you lack wisdom, let him ask it of God, who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.
But the comforter, that is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said unto you.
But when the Spirit of truth is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He will not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that will He speak, and will shew you things to come.
But as it is written, "Eye hath not seen, and ear hath not heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, what things God hath prepared for those that love Him." But God hath revealed them to us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, even the deep things of God.
