So, then, brethren, stand fast, and hold the instructions which ye were taught, whether through speech, or through letter of ours.
But I exhort you, brethren, bear with the word of exhortation; for, indeed, I wrote to you in few words.

that I may not seem as if I would terrify you with letters; because, "His letters, indeed," says one, "are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible." Let such a one consider this: that such as we are in word through letters, when absent; such also are we in deed, when present.
