Then said Jesus to his disciples, If any one is willing to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me:
Dearly beloved, I exhort you as strangers and sojourners here, to abstain from carnal lusts, which war against the soul:
chusing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to have the temporary enjoyment of sin:
and he shall drink neither wine nor any other strong liquor; and he shall be filled with the holy Spirit even from his birth;
for John the baptist came neither eating bread, nor drinking wine, and ye say, he hath a demon:
And calling the people and his disciples to Him, He said unto them, Whosoever is willing to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me:
And He said unto them all, if any one is willing to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me:
But Paul answered, What do ye mean, weeping and breaking my heart? for I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.
And therefore if thy right eye cause thee to offend, pluck it out and cast it from thee; for it is better for thee that one part of thee perish, than that thy whole body should be cast into hell:
"Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, as in heaven so also upon earth;
And as Jesus was passing from thence, He saw a man sitting at the custom-house, named Matthew; and He saith to him, Follow me: and he rose up and followed Him.
And He went out again towards the sea-side, and all the people resorted to Him, and He taught them. And as He went along, He saw Levi the son of Alpheus, sitting at the receit of custom, and saith unto him, Follow me: and he rose up and followed Him.
After these things He went out and saw a publican named Levi, sitting at the custom-house, and said to him, Follow me: and he left all, rose up, and followed Him.
And if thy hand cause thee to offend, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands, to go into hell, into the fire that will never be extinguished;
Jesus replied, If thou wouldst be perfect, go, sell thy estate, and give it to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come and follow me.
Then Peter replied and said unto Him, Behold we have quitted all and have followed thee; what then shall we have?
Then Peter said to Him, Behold we have left all, and followed thee.
yea and every one who hath left houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, shall receive an hundred-fold, and shall inherit eternal life.
And Jesus answered and said, Verily I tell you, there is no one that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my sake and the gospel's, but he shall receive an hundred-fold: now in this time indeed, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands with persecutions; but in the world to come life everlasting.
And when they had brought their ships to land, they left all and followed Him.
Take heed to yourselves, least at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness, and the cares of life, and so that day should come upon you unawares:
But none of these things move me, nor do I account my life dear, so that I may finish my course with joy, and the ministry which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.
God forbid! how shall we, who are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
for if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die; but if by the Spirit ye mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, and well-pleasing to God, as your rational service.
But put on the Lord Jesus, and make not provision for the flesh to gratify its irregular desires.
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be under the power of any:
And every one that enters the lists is temperate in all things: they indeed do it that they may receive a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible one. I therefore so run, not as unobserved: I so fight, not as one that beateth the air: but I mortify my body and bring it into subjection, least after having preached to others, I myself should be rejected.
And this they did not merely as we hoped, but first gave themselves unto the Lord, and to us by the will of God.
I am crucified with Christ; yet I live, though no longer I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave up himself for me.
For ye are dead as to the world, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
If therefore any one purify himself from these corruptions, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified and fitted for the Master's use, being prepared for every good work.
teaching us that denying ungodliness, and worldly desires, we should live soberly, and righteously, and piously in this present world; looking for the blessed hope, and glorious appearance of the great God, and our Saviour, Jesus Christ:
Submit yourselves therefore to God: resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
that he should no longer live the rest of his time in the flesh according to the lusts of men, but after the will of God.
Look not every one to his own interests only, but every one also to the concerns of others.
It is good not to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor to do any thing at which thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or weakened.
Now we that are strong, ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves:
wherefore if meat make my brother to offend, I will never eat flesh while I breathe, least I make my brother to offend.
Mortify therefore your members that are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, disorderly passion, evil concupiscence, and insatiable desire, which is indeed idolatry:
No one, that enters into military service, embarrasseth himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him.
