'Time' in the Bible

and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.

When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he became enraged. He sent men to kill all the children in Bethlehem and throughout the surrounding region from the age of two and under, according to the time he had learned from the wise men.

At that time Jesus went through the grain fields on a Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and they began to pick heads of wheat and eat them.

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard reports about Jesus,

At that time the disciples came to Jesus saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"

But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have been alert and would not have let his house be broken into.

"Who then is the faithful and wise slave, whom the master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves their food at the proper time?

But if that evil slave should say to himself, 'My master is staying away a long time,'

"At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

When the bridegroom was delayed a long time, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

He said, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is near. I will observe the Passover with my disciples at your house."'"

So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same thing once more.

At that time they had in custody a notorious prisoner named Jesus Barabbas.

But the days are coming when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and at that time they will fast.

He said to them, "Come with me privately to an isolated place and rest a while" (for many were coming and going, and there was no time to eat).

He came a third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough of that! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

But he denied it again. A short time later the bystanders again said to Peter, "You must be one of them, because you are also a Galilean."

Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said to him: "Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times." And he broke down and wept.

Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. He called the centurion and asked him if he had been dead for some time.

And now, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time, you will be silent, unable to speak, until the day these things take place."

When his time of service was over, he went to his home.

After some time his wife Elizabeth became pregnant, and for five months she kept herself in seclusion. She said,

"This is what the Lord has done for me at the time when he has been gracious to me, to take away my disgrace among people."

Now the time came for Elizabeth to have her baby, and she gave birth to a son.

While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child.

Now when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, Joseph and Mary brought Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord

So when the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until a more opportune time.

And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, yet none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."

But those days are coming, and when the bridegroom is taken from them, at that time they will fast."

At that very time Jesus cured many people of diseases, sicknesses, and evil spirits, and granted sight to many who were blind.

You gave me no kiss of greeting, but from the time I entered she has not stopped kissing my feet.

Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in a time of testing fall away.

As Jesus stepped ashore, a certain man from the town met him who was possessed by demons. For a long time this man had worn no clothes and had not lived in a house, but among the tombs.

After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. So they kept silent and told no one at that time anything of what they had seen.

The Lord replied, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his household servants, to give them their allowance of food at the proper time?

You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but how can you not know how to interpret the present time?

So he said to the worker who tended the vineyard, 'For three years now, I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and each time I inspect it I find none. Cut it down! Why should it continue to deplete the soil?'

At that time, some Pharisees came up and said to Jesus, "Get away from here, because Herod wants to kill you."

At the time for the banquet he sent his slave to tell those who had been invited, 'Come, because everything is now ready.'

They will demolish you -- you and your children within your walls -- and they will not leave within you one stone on top of another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God."

Then he began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, leased it to tenant farmers, and went on a journey for a long time.

When he learned that he was from Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who also happened to be in Jerusalem at that time.

A third time he said to them, "Why? What wrong has he done? I have found him guilty of no crime deserving death. I will therefore flog him and release him."

Jesus replied, "Woman, why are you saying this to me? My time has not yet come."

After this, Jesus and his disciples came into Judean territory, and there he spent time with them and was baptizing.

Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

But a time is coming -- and now is here -- when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers.

So he asked them the time when his condition began to improve, and they told him, "Yesterday at one o'clock in the afternoon the fever left him."

Then the father realized that it was the very time Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live," and he himself believed along with his entire household.

When Jesus saw him lying there and when he realized that the man had been disabled a long time already, he said to him, "Do you want to become well?"

"Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice

He was a lamp that was burning and shining, and you wanted to rejoice greatly for a short time in his light.

So they said to him, "Sir, give us this bread all the time!"

So Jesus replied, "My time has not yet arrived, but you are ready at any opportunity!

You go up to the feast yourselves. I am not going up to this feast because my time has not yet fully arrived."

So then they tried to seize Jesus, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.

Now when they heard this, they began to drift away one at a time, starting with the older ones, until Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.

(Jesus spoke these words near the offering box while he was teaching in the temple courts. No one seized him because his time had not yet come.)

Then they summoned the man who used to be blind a second time and said to him, "Promise before God to tell the truth. We know that this man is a sinner."

Jesus went back across the Jordan River again to the place where John had been baptizing at an earlier time, and he stayed there.

Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the deceased, replied, "Lord, by this time the body will have a bad smell, because he has been buried four days."

But I have told you these things so that when their time comes, you will remember that I told you about them. "I did not tell you these things from the beginning because I was with you.

When a woman gives birth, she has distress because her time has come, but when her child is born, she no longer remembers the suffering because of her joy that a human being has been born into the world.

At that time you will ask me nothing. I tell you the solemn truth, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.

"I have told you these things in obscure figures of speech; a time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in obscure figures, but will tell you plainly about the Father.

At that time you will ask in my name, and I do not say that I will ask the Father on your behalf.

Look, a time is coming -- and has come -- when you will be scattered, each one to his own home, and I will be left alone. Yet I am not alone, because my Father is with me.

When Jesus had finished saying these things, he looked upward to heaven and said, "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, so that your Son may glorify you --

He then said to his disciple, "Look, here is your mother!" From that very time the disciple took her into his own home.

This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus said a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He replied, "Yes, Lord, you know I love you." Jesus told him, "Shepherd my sheep."

Jesus said a third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that Jesus asked him a third time, "Do you love me?" and said, "Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you." Jesus replied, "Feed my sheep.
