Since [as is well known] many have undertaken to compile an orderly account of the things which have been fulfilled among us [by God],

exactly as they were handed down to us by those [with personal experience] who from the beginning [of Christ’s ministry] were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word [that is, of the teaching concerning salvation through faith in Christ],

To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies,Might serve Him without fear,

When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying one to another, “Let us go straight to Bethlehem, and see this [wonderful] thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.”

When they saw Him, they were overwhelmed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You treated us like this? Listen, Your father and I have been [greatly distressed and] anxiously looking for You.”

“Let us alone! What business do we have [in common] with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

because he loves our nation and he built us our synagogue [at his own expense].”

Fear and profound awe gripped them all, and they began glorifying and honoring and praising God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has visited His people [to help and care for and provide for them]!”

So the men came to Jesus and said, “John the Baptist sent us to You to ask, ‘Are You the Expected One (the Messiah), or should we look for someone else?’”

Now on one of those days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake (Sea of Galilee).” So they set out.

And as these [men, Moses and Elijah] were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is delightful and good for us to be here; we should make three [sacred] tents; one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not realizing what he was saying.

John replied, “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in Your name; and we tried to stop him because he does not follow along with us.”

When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and destroy them?”

It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.”

One of the lawyers [an expert in the Mosaic Law] answered Him, “Teacher, by saying this, You insult us too!”

Peter said, “Lord, are You addressing this parable to us [disciples], or to everyone else as well?”

Once the head of the house gets up and closes the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door [again and again], saying, ‘Lord, open to us!’ then He will answer you, ‘I do not know where you are from [for you are not of My household].’

And besides all this, between us and you [people] a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to come over from here to you will not be able, and none may cross over from there to us.’

and they raised their voices and called out, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”

But his citizens [the residents of his new kingdom] hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to be a king over us.’

and said to Him, “Tell us by what kind of authority You are doing these things? Or who is the one who gave You this authority?”

But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are firmly convinced that John was a prophet.”

But when the tenants saw him, they discussed it among themselves, saying, ‘This [man] is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’

Is it lawful [according to Jewish law and tradition] for us to pay taxes (tribute money) to Caesar or not?”

and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us [a law that] if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife and no children, his brother should marry the wife and raise children for his brother.

So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us, so that we may eat it.”

They asked Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?”

“If You are the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed), tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe [what I say],

No, nor has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and indeed, He has done nothing to deserve death.

But they [loudly] shouted out all together, saying, “Away with this Man, and release Barabbas to us!”

Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us!’

One of the criminals who had been hanged [on a cross beside Him] kept hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us [from death]!”

And also some of the women among us shocked us. They were at the tomb early in the morning,

Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women had said, but they did not see Him.”

But they urged Him [not to go on], saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening, and the day has just about ended.” So He went inside to stay with them.

They said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was talking with us on the road and opening the Scriptures to us?”
