Stephen Arrested

¹⁰ But they were unable to stand up against his wisdom and the Spirit by whom he was speaking. ¹¹ Then they persuaded some men to say, “We heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God!” ¹² They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; so they came, dragged him off, and took him to the Sanhedrin.

Matthew 26:59-60

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so they could put Him to death.

Leviticus 24:16

Whoever blasphemes the name of Yahweh is to be put to death; the whole community must stone him. If he blasphemes the Name, he is to be put to death, whether the foreign resident or the native.
