'God' in the Bible
As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul;
All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils;
God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me.
“I hold fast my uprightness and my right standing with God and I will not let them go;My heart does not reproach me for any of my days.
For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?
Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him?
Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God?
I will teach you by the hand of God: that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.
This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty.
For God shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand.
“People will clap their hands at him [to mock and ridicule him]And hiss him out of his place.
God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.
When God fixed the weight of the windand limited the water by measure,
Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;
As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;
Because God has loosened my bowstring and oppressed me,they have cast off restraint in my presence.
By God's great force is my garment disfigured; It bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.
“God has cast me into the mire [a swampland of crisis],And I have become [worthless] like dust and ashes.
For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
“Does not God see my waysAnd count all my steps?
Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.
What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?
Did not the One who made me in the womb also make them?Did not the same God form us both in the womb?
(For I was cared for by God as by a father from my earliest days; he was my guide from the body of my mother;)
For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.
This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.
If only God would give ear to me, and the Ruler of all would give me an answer! or if what he has against me had been put in writing!
So these three men ceased answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes [and could not be persuaded otherwise by them].
Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.
Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusteth him down, not man.
The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.
I am just like you before God;I was also pinched off from a piece of clay.
“Behold, I will not make you afraid or terrified of me [for I am only mortal and not God],Nor should any pressure from me weigh heavily upon you.
Nevertheless, God has found a pretext to attack me; he considers me his enemy.
Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.
For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.
God spares his soul from the Pit,his life from crossing the river of death.
“If there is an angel as a mediator for him,One out of a thousand,To explain to a man what is right for him [that is, how to be in right standing with God],
Then God is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.
He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.
‘God has redeemed my life from going to the pit [of destruction],And my life shall see the light.’”
Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man,
For Job hath said, I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgment.
What man is like Job, a man who freely makes sport of God,
For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.
Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.
“For God pays a man according to his work,And He will make every man find [appropriate] compensation according to his way.
Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.
“Who put God in charge over the earth? And who has laid on Him the whole world?
If God were to set his heart on it, and gather in his spirit and his breath,
Can one who hates justice really govern? And if God is righteous and mighty, can you condemn him?
“God who says to a king, ‘You are worthless and vile,’Or to princes and nobles, ‘You are wicked and evil’?
God is not partial to princesand does not favor the rich over the poor, for they are all the work of His hands.
For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God.
“He strikes them like the wickedIn a public place,
But when God is silent, who can declare Him guilty? When He hides His face, who can see Him?Yet He watches over both individuals and nations,
Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more:
Should God repay you on your termswhen you have rejected His?You must choose, not I!So declare what you know.
For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God.
Do you think it is just when you say,“I am righteous before God”?
If you sin, how does it affect God?If you multiply your transgressions, what does it do to Him?
If you are righteous, what will you add to him? What can God receive from your efforts?
“Your wickedness affects only a man such as you,And your righteousness affects only a son of man [but it cannot affect God, who is sovereign].
But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;
Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.
“And now, because He has not [quickly] punished in His anger,Nor has He acknowledged transgression and arrogance well [and seems unaware of the wrong of which a person is guilty],
Honour me a little, and I shew thee, That yet for God are words.
Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom.
“He does not withdraw His eyes from the righteous [those in right standing with Him];But with kings upon the throneHe has seated them forever, and they are exalted.
God tells them what they have doneand how arrogantly they have transgressed.
Those who have a godless heart harbor anger;even when God binds them, they do not cry for help.
God rescues the afflicted by their affliction; He instructs them by their torment.
“Then indeed, He enticed you from the mouth of distress and confinement,Into a broad place where there is no constraint or distress; And that which was set on your table was full of fatness (rich food).
“Take heed and be careful, do not turn to wickedness,For you have chosen this [the vice of complaining against God] rather than [learning from] affliction.
Behold, God exalteth by his power: who teacheth like him?
“Who has appointed God His way,And who can say [to Him], ‘You have done wrong’?
Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.
“For by these [mighty acts] He judges the peoples; He gives food in abundance.
Then there comes a roaring sound;God thunders with His majestic voice. He does not restrain the lightningwhen His rumbling voice is heard.
God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.
“God seals (brings to a standstill, stops) [by severe weather] the hand of every man,That all men [whom He has made] may know His work [that is, His sovereign power and their subjection to it].
By the breath of God frost is given: and the breadth of the waters is straitened.
Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.
Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine?
can you help God spread out the skiesas hard as a cast metal mirror?
“Tell us [Job] what words [of man] shall we say to such a Being; We cannot state our case because of darkness [that is, our ignorance in the presence of the unsearchable God].
Has it been relayed to God that I want to talk? Can a person speak when he is confused?"
Fair weather cometh out of the north: with God is terrible majesty.
Who is this who makes the purpose of God dark by words without knowledge?
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.
Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.
Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it.
“Will you really annul My judgment and set it aside as void? Will you condemn Me [your God] that you may [appear to] be righteous and justified?
Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him?
“[If you can do all this, Job, proving your divine power] then I [God] will also praise you and acknowledgeThat your own right hand can save you.
He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.
“Who has first given to Me that I should repay him?Whatever is under the whole heaven is Mine. [Who can have a claim against Me who made the unmastered beast?]
“He looks on everything that is high [without terror];He is monarch over all the sons of pride. [And now, Job, who are you who does not dare to disturb the beast, yet who dares resist Me, the beast’s creator? Everything under the heavens is Mine; therefore, who can have a claim against God?]”
Who is this who makes dark the purpose of God by words without knowledge? For I have been talking without knowledge about wonders not to be searched out.
