'Vengeance' in the Bible

Then the Lord replied to him, “In that case, whoever kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” And He placed a mark on Cain so that whoever found him would not kill him.

I will bring a sword against you to execute the vengeance of the covenant. Though you withdraw into your cities, I will send a pestilence among you, and you will be delivered into enemy hands.

“Execute vengeance for the Israelites against the Midianites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”

So Moses spoke to the people, “Equip some of your men for war. They will go against Midian to inflict the Lord’s vengeance on them.

Vengeance belongs to Me; I will repay.In time their foot will slip,for their day of disaster is near,and their doom is coming quickly.”

when I sharpen My flashing sword,and My hand takes hold of judgment,I will take vengeance on My adversariesand repay those who hate Me.

Rejoice, you nations, concerning His people,for He will avenge the blood of His servants.He will take vengeance on His adversaries;He will purify His land and His people.

And the sun stood stilland the moon stoppeduntil the nation took vengeance on its enemies.Isn’t this written in the Book of Jashar?So the sun stoppedin the middle of the skyand delayed its settingalmost a full day.

Then she said to him, “My father, you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me as you have said, for the Lord brought vengeance on your enemies, the Ammonites.”

Then Samson told them, “Because you did this, I swear that I won’t rest until I have taken vengeance on you.”

He called out to the Lord: “Lord God, please remember me. Strengthen me, God, just once more. With one act of vengeance, let me pay back the Philistines for my two eyes.”

and the men of Israel were worn out that day, for Saul had placed the troops under an oath: “The man who eats food before evening, before I have taken vengeance on my enemies is cursed.” So none of the troops tasted any food.

“May the Lord judge between you and me, and may the Lord take vengeance on you for me, but my hand will never be against you.

They brought Ish-bosheth’s head to David at Hebron and said to the king, “Here’s the head of Ish-bosheth son of Saul, your enemy who intended to take your life. Today the Lord has granted vengeance to my lord the king against Saul and his offspring.”

God—He gives me vengeanceand casts down peoples under me.

God—He gives me vengeanceand subdues peoples under me.

Why should the nations ask,“Where is their God?”Before our eyes,let vengeance for the shed blood of Your servantsbe known among the nations.

Lord, God of vengeance—God of vengeance, appear.

inflicting vengeance on the nationsand punishment on the peoples,

For the Lord has a day of vengeance,a time of paying back Edomfor its hostility against Zion.

Say to the cowardly:“Be strong; do not fear!Here is your God; vengeance is coming.God’s retribution is coming; He will save you.”

Your nakedness will be uncovered,and your shame will be exposed.I will take vengeance;I will spare no one.

He put on righteousness like a breastplate,and a helmet of salvation on His head;He put on garments of vengeance for clothing,and He wrapped Himself in zeal as in a cloak.

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,and the day of our God’s vengeance;to comfort all who mourn,

For I planned the day of vengeance,and the year of My redemption came.

But, Lord of Hosts, who judges righteously,who tests heart and mind,let me see Your vengeance on them,for I have presented my case to You.

For I have heard the gossip of many people,“Terror is on every side!Report him; let’s report him!”Everyone I trusted watches for my fall.“Perhaps he will be deceivedso that we might prevail against himand take our vengeance on him.”

Lord of Hosts, testing the righteousand seeing the heart and mind,let me see Your vengeance on them,for I have presented my case to You.

That day belongs to the Lord, the God of Hosts,a day of vengeance to avenge Himselfagainst His adversaries.The sword will devour and be satisfied;it will drink its fill of their blood,because it will be a sacrifice to the Lord, the God of Hosts,in the northern land by the Euphrates River.

Raise a war cry against her on every side!She has thrown up her hands in surrender;her defense towers have fallen;her walls are demolished.Since this is the Lord’s vengeance,take out your vengeance on her;as she has done, do the same to her.

“There is a voice of fugitives and those who escapefrom the land of Babylonannouncing in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God,the vengeance for His temple.

Leave Babylon;save your lives, each of you!Don’t perish because of her guilt.For this is the time of the Lord’s vengeance—He will pay her what she deserves.

Sharpen the arrows!Fill the quivers!The Lord has put it into the mindof the kings of the Medesbecause His plan is aimed at Babylonto destroy her,for it is the Lord’s vengeance,vengeance for His temple.

Therefore, this is what the Lord says:I am about to plead your caseand take vengeance on your behalf;I will dry up her seaand make her fountain run dry.

In order to stir up wrath and take vengeance,I have put her blood on the bare rock,so that it would not be covered.

I will take My vengeance on Edom through My people Israel, and they will deal with Edom according to My anger and wrath. So they will know My vengeance.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.

This is what the Lord God says: “Because the Philistines acted in vengeance and took revenge with deep contempt, destroying because of their ancient hatred,

I will execute great vengeance against them with furious rebukes. They will know that I am Yahweh when I take My vengeance on them.”

I will take vengeance in anger and wrathagainst the nations that have not obeyed Me.

The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;the Lord takes vengeanceand is fierce in wrath.The Lord takes vengeance against His foes;He is furious with His enemies.

because these are days of vengeance to fulfill all the things that are written.

Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for His wrath. For it is written: Vengeance belongs to Me; I will repay, says the Lord.

taking vengeance with flaming fire on those who don’t know God and on those who don’t obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

For we know the One who has said, Vengeance belongs to Me, I will repay, and again, The Lord will judge His people.
