'Look' in the Bible
And I will wait for the Lord who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; and I will look eagerly for Him.
They [who consult mediums and soothsayers] will pass through the land deeply distressed and hungry, and when they are hungry, they will become enraged and will curse their king and their God as they look upward.
Then they will look to the earth, they will see only distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be driven away into darkness and overwhelming night.
In that day man will have regard for his Maker,And his eyes will regard the Holy One of Israel [with awe-inspired reverence].
And he will not have regard for the [idolatrous] altars, the work of his hands,Nor will he look to that which his fingers have made,Neither the Asherim (symbols of the goddess Asherah) nor the incense altars.
All you inhabitants of the world, you who dwell on the earth,When a banner is raised on the mountains, you will see it!When a trumpet is blown, you will hear it!
For this is what the Lord has said to me,“I will be quiet and I will look on from My dwelling place,Like shimmering heat above the sunshine,Like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.”
Therefore I say, “Look away from me;Let me weep bitterly.Do not try to comfort me over the destruction of the daughter of my people.”
You also made a reservoir between the two wallsFor the waters of the Old Pool,But you did not look to its Maker,Nor did you recognize Him who planned it long ago.
Now look at the land of the Chaldeans (Babylonia)—this is the people which was not; the Assyrians allocated Tyre for desert creatures—they set up their siege towers, they stripped its palaces, they made it a ruin.
Therefore the Lord waits [expectantly] and longs to be gracious to you,And therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you.For the Lord is a God of justice;Blessed (happy, fortunate) are all those who long for Him [since He will never fail them].
Woe (judgment is coming) to those who go down to Egypt for help,Who rely on horsesAnd trust in chariots because they are many,And in horsemen because they are very strong,But they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek and consult the Lord!
Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feasts and observances;Your eyes will see Jerusalem, a undisturbed settlement,A tent which will not be taken down; Not one of its stakes will ever be pulled up,Nor any of its ropes be severed.
But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him]Will gain new strength and renew their power; They will lift up their wings [and rise up close to God] like eagles [rising toward the sun];They will run and not become weary,They will walk and not grow tired.
‘Do not fear [anything], for I am with you;Do not be afraid, for I am your God.I will strengthen you, be assured I will help you;I will certainly take hold of you with My righteous right hand [a hand of justice, of power, of victory, of salvation].’
“But when I look [on the pagan prophets and priests], there is no one [who could predict these events],And there is no counselor among them,Who, if I ask, can give an answer.
Hear, you deaf! And look, you blind, that you may see.
“Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; For I am God, and there is no other.
“Kings will be your attendants,And their princesses your nurses. They will bow down to you with their faces to the earthAnd lick the dust of your feet; And you shall know [with an understanding based on personal experience] that I am the Lord; For they shall not be put to shame who wait and hope expectantly for Me.
“Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness (right standing with God),Who seek and inquire of the Lord:Look to the rock from which you were cutAnd to the excavation of the quarry from which you were dug.
“Look to Abraham your fatherAnd to Sarah who gave birth to you in pain; For I called him when he was but one,Then I blessed him and made him many.”
“Lift up your eyes to the heavens,Then look to the earth beneath; For the heavens will be torn to pieces and vanish like smoke,And the earth will wear out like a garmentAnd its inhabitants will die in like manner. But My salvation will be forever,And My righteousness (justice) [and faithfully fulfilled promise] will not be broken.
For He [the Servant of God] grew up before Him like a tender shoot (plant),And like a root out of dry ground; He has no stately form or majestic splendorThat we would look at Him,Nor [handsome] appearance that we would be attracted to Him.
We all groan and growl like bears,And coo sadly like doves; We hope for justice, but there is none,For salvation, but it is far from us.
Look down from heaven and see from Your lofty dwelling place, holy and glorious.Where are Your zeal and Your mighty acts [Your miracles which you did for Your people]?The stirring of Your heart and Your compassion are restrained and withheld from me.
“For all these things My hand has made,So all these things came into being [by and for Me],” declares the Lord.“But to this one I will look [graciously],To him who is humble and contrite in spirit, and who [reverently] trembles at My word and honors My commands.
