'Look' in the Bible
When you lift up your hands in prayer,I will refuse to look at you;even if you offer countless prayers,I will not listen.Your hands are covered with blood.
The look on their faces testifies against them,and like Sodom, they flaunt their sin.They do not conceal it.Woe to them,for they have brought evil on themselves.
He raises a signal flag for the distant nationsand whistles for them from the ends of the earth.Look—how quickly and swiftly they come!
They will look toward the earth and see only distress, darkness, and the gloom of affliction, and they will be driven into thick darkness.
But when the Lord finishes all His work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, He will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria for his arrogant acts and the proud look in his eyes.”
Look, the Lord God of Hostswill chop off the branches with terrifying power,and the tall trees will be cut down,the high trees felled.
They will be horrified;pain and agony will seize them;they will be in anguish like a woman in labor.They will look at each other,their faces flushed with fear.
Look, the day of the Lord is coming—cruel, with rage and burning anger—to make the earth a desolationand to destroy the sinners on it.
Look! I am stirring up the Medes against them,who cannot be bought off with silverand who have no desire for gold.
Their bows will cut young men to pieces.They will have no compassion on little ones;they will not look with pity on children.
Those who see you will stare at you;they will look closely at you:“Is this the man who caused the earth to tremble,who shook the kingdoms,
An oracle against Damascus:Look, Damascus is no longer a city.It has become a ruined heap.
On that day people will look to their Maker and will turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.
They will not look to the altars they made with their hands or to the Asherahs and incense altars they made with their fingers.
All you inhabitants of the worldand you who live on the earth,when a banner is raised on the mountains, look!When a trumpet sounds, listen!
An oracle against Egypt:Look, the Lord rides on a swift cloudand is coming to Egypt.Egypt’s idols will tremble before Him,and Egypt’s heart will melt within it.

Therefore I said,“Look away from me! Let me weep bitterly!Do not try to comfort meabout the destruction of my dear people.”
You made a reservoir between the walls for the waters of the ancient pool, but you did not look to the One who made it, or consider the One who created it long ago.
But look: joy and gladness,butchering of cattle, slaughtering of sheep,eating of meat, and drinking of wine—“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”
Look, you strong man! The Lord is about to shake you violently. He will take hold of you,
Look at the land of the Chaldeans—a people who no longer exist.Assyria destined it for desert creatures.They set up their siege towersand stripped its palaces.They made it a ruin.
Look, the Lord is stripping the earth bareand making it desolate.He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants:
On that day it will be said,“Look, this is our God;we have waited for Him, and He has saved us.This is the Lord; we have waited for Him.Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.”
For look, the Lord is coming from His placeto punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity.The earth will reveal the blood shed on itand will no longer conceal her slain.
Look, the Lord has a strong and mighty one—like a devastating hail storm,like a storm with strong flooding waters.He will bring it across the land with His hand.
Therefore the Lord God said:“Look, I have laid a stone in Zion,a tested stone,a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;the one who believes will be unshakable.
Look, Yahweh comes from far away,His anger burning and heavy with smoke.His lips are full of fury,and His tongue is like a consuming fire.
Woe to those who go down to Egypt for helpand who depend on horses!They trust in the abundance of chariotsand in the large number of horsemen.They do not look to the Holy One of Israeland they do not seek the Lord’s help.
Look at Zion, the city of our festival times.Your eyes will see Jerusalem,a peaceful pasture, a tent that does not wander;its tent pegs will not be pulled upnor will any of its cords be loosened.
Look, you are trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff that will enter and pierce the hand of anyone who leans on it. This is how Pharaoh king of Egypt is to all who trust in him.
I am about to put a spirit in him and he will hear a rumor and return to his own land, where I will cause him to fall by the sword.’”
Look, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries: they completely destroyed them. Will you be rescued?
“Go and tell Hezekiah that this is what the Lord God of your ancestor David says: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Look, I am going to add 15 years to your life.
I said: I will never see the Lord,the Lord in the land of the living;I will not look on humanity any longerwith the inhabitants of what is passing away.
Look, the nations are like a drop in a bucket;they are considered as a speck of dust in the scales;He lifts up the islands like fine dust.
Look up and see:who created these?He brings out the starry host by number;He calls all of them by name.Because of His great power and strength,not one of them is missing.
You will look for those who contend with you,but you will not find them.Those who war against youwill become absolutely nothing.
Look, you are nothingand your work is worthless.Anyone who chooses you is detestable.
I was the first to say to Zion:Look! Here they are!And I gave a herald of good news to Jerusalem.
When I look, there is no one;there is no counselor among them;when I ask them, they have nothing to say.
Look, all of them are a delusion;their works are nonexistent;their images are wind and emptiness.
“Listen, you deaf!Look, you blind, so that you may see.
Look, I am about to do something new;even now it is coming. Do you not see it?Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness,rivers in the desert.
Look, all its worshipers will be put to shame,and the craftsmen are humans.They all will assemble and stand;they all will be startled and put to shame.
Look, they are like stubble;fire burns them up.They cannot deliver themselvesfrom the power of the flame.This is not a coal for warming themselves,or a fire to sit beside!
Look, I have refined you, but not as silver;I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.
Look, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;your walls are continually before Me.
Look up, and look around.They all gather together; they come to you.As I live”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“you will wear all your children as jewelry,and put them on as a bride does.
This is what the Lord God says:Look, I will lift up My hand to the nations,and raise My banner to the peoples.They will bring your sons in their arms,and your daughters will be carried on their shoulders.
This is what the Lord says:Where is your mother’s divorce certificatethat I used to send her away?Or who were My creditors that I sold you to?Look, you were sold for your iniquities,and your mother was put awaybecause of your transgressions.
Why was no one there when I came?Why was there no one to answer when I called?Is My hand too short to redeem?Or do I have no power to deliver?Look, I dry up the sea by My rebuke;I turn the rivers into a wilderness;their fish rot because of lack of waterand die of thirst.
Look, all you who kindle a fire,who encircle yourselves with firebrands;walk in the light of your fireand in the firebrands you have lit!This is what you’ll get from My hand:you will lie down in a place of torment.
Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness,you who seek the Lord:Look to the rock from which you were cut,and to the quarry from which you were dug.
Look to Abraham your father,and to Sarah who gave birth to you in pain.When I called him, he was only one;I blessed him and made him many.
My righteousness is near,My salvation appears,and My arms will bring justice to the nations.The coastlands will put their hope in Me,and they will look to My strength.
Look up to the heavens,and look at the earth beneath;for the heavens will vanish like smoke,the earth will wear out like a garment,and its inhabitants will die like gnats.But My salvation will last forever,and My righteousness will never be shattered.
This is what your Lord says—Yahweh, even your God,who defends His people—“Look, I have removedthe cup of staggering from your hand;that goblet, the cup of My fury.You will never drink it again.
Just as many were appalled at You—His appearance was so disfiguredthat He did not look like a man,and His form did not resemble a human being—
He grew up before Him like a young plantand like a root out of dry ground.He didn’t have an impressive formor majesty that we should look at Him,no appearance that we should desire Him.
Look, I have created the craftsmanwho blows on the charcoal fireand produces a weapon suitable for its task;and I have created the destroyer to cause havoc.
No foreigner who has joined himself to the Lordshould say,“The Lord will exclude me from His people”;and the eunuch should not say,“Look, I am a dried-up tree.”
“Why have we fasted, but You have not seen?We have denied ourselves, but You haven’t noticed!”“Look, you do as you please on the day of your fast,and oppress all your workers.
For look, darkness covers the earth,and total darkness the peoples;but the Lord will shine over you,and His glory will appear over you.
Raise your eyes and look around:they all gather and come to you;your sons will come from far away,and your daughters will be carried on the hip.
Look, the Lord has proclaimedto the ends of the earth,“Say to Daughter Zion:Look, your salvation is coming,His reward is with Him,and His gifts accompany Him.”
Look down from heaven and seefrom Your lofty home—holy and beautiful.Where is Your zeal and Your might?Your yearning and Your compassionare withheld from me.
Lord, do not be terribly angryor remember our iniquity forever.Please look—all of us are Your people!
My hand made all these things,and so they all came into being.This is the Lord’s declaration.I will look favorably on this kind of person:one who is humble, submissive in spirit,and trembles at My word.
Look, the Lord will come with fire—His chariots are like the whirlwind—to execute His anger with furyand His rebuke with flames of fire.
