'Men' in the Bible
But [when these people set a trap for others] they lie in wait for their own blood;They set an ambush for their own lives [and rush to their destruction].
To keep you from the way of evil and the evil man,From the man who speaks perverse things;
From those who leave the paths of uprightnessTo walk in the ways of darkness;
So you will walk in the way of good men [that is, those of personal integrity, moral courage and honorable character],And keep to the paths of the righteous.
For the upright [those who are in right standing with God] will live in the landAnd those [of integrity] who are blameless [in God’s sight] will remain in it;
Do not enter the path of the wicked,And do not go the way of evil men.
People do not despise a thief if he stealsTo satisfy himself when he is hungry;
“To you, O men, I call,And my voice is directed to the sons of men.
Rejoicing in the world, His inhabited earth,And having my delight in the sons of men.
Wise men store up and treasure knowledge [in mind and heart],But with the mouth of the foolish, ruin is at hand.
A gracious and good woman attains honor,And ruthless men attain riches [but not respect].
The fruit of the [consistently] righteous is a tree of life,And he who is wise captures and wins souls [for God—he gathers them for eternity].
The wicked desire the plunder of evil men,But the root of the righteous yields richer fruit.
He who walks [as a companion] with wise men will be wise,But the companions of [conceited, dull-witted] fools [are fools themselves and] will experience harm.
The evil will bow down before the good,And the wicked [will bow down] at the gates of the righteous.
Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead) and Abaddon (the abyss, the place of eternal punishment) lie open before the Lord—How much more the hearts and inner motives of the children of men.
By mercy and lovingkindness and truth [not superficial ritual] wickedness is cleansed from the heart,And by the fear of the Lord one avoids evil.
It is repulsive [to God and man] for kings to behave wickedly,For a throne is established on righteousness (right standing with God).
Grandchildren are the crown of aged men,And the glory of children is their fathers [who live godly lives].
A man’s gift [given in love or courtesy] makes room for himAnd brings him before great men.
The glory of young men is their [physical] strength,And the honor of aged men is their gray head [representing wisdom and experience].
When the scoffer is punished, the naive [observes the lesson and] becomes wise;But when the wise and teachable person is instructed, he receives knowledge.
Do you see a man skillful and experienced in his work?He will stand [in honor] before kings;He will not stand before obscure men.
She lurks and lies in wait like a robber [who waits for prey],And she increases the faithless among men.
Do not be envious of evil men,Nor desire to be with them;
The devising of folly is sin,And the scoffer is repulsive to men.
He kisses the lips [and wins the hearts of people]Who gives a right and straightforward answer.
These are also the proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied:
Do not be boastfully ambitious and claim honor in the presence of the king,And do not stand in the place of great men;
It is not good to eat much honey,Nor is it glorious to seek one’s own glory.
The lazy person is wiser in his own eyesThan seven [sensible] men who can give a discreet answer.
Evil men do not understand justice,But they who long for and seek the Lord understand it fully.
When the righteous triumph, there is great glory and celebration;But when the wicked rise [to prominence], men hide themselves.
When the wicked rise [to power], men hide themselves;But when the wicked perish, the [consistently] righteous increase and become great.
Scoffers set a city afire [by stirring up trouble],But wise men turn away anger [and restore order with their good judgment].
There is a generation (class of people) whose teeth are like swordsAnd whose jaw teeth are like knives,To devour the afflicted from the earthAnd the needy from among men.
