'One' in the Bible
The kings of the earth take their stand;And the rulers take counsel togetherAgainst the Lord and His Anointed (the Davidic King, the Messiah, the Christ), saying,
For the wicked boasts and sings the praises of his heart’s desire,And the greedy man curses and spurns [and even despises] the Lord.
The wicked, in the haughtiness of his face, will not seek nor inquire for Him;All his thoughts are, “There is no God [so there is no accountability or punishment].”
“If the foundations [of a godly society] are destroyed,What can the righteous do?”
They speak deceitful and worthless words to one another;With flattering lips and a double heart they speak.
They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt;There is no one who does good, not even one.
He does not put out his money at interest [to a fellow Israelite],And does not take a bribe against the innocent.He who does these things will never be shaken.
For You will not abandon me to Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead),Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.
My steps have held closely to Your paths;My feet have not staggered.
The sun’s rising is from one end of the heavens,And its circuit to the other end of them;And there is nothing hidden from its heat.
Rescue my life from the sword,My only life from the paw of the dog (the executioner).
One thing I have asked of the Lord, and that I will seek:That I may dwell in the house of the Lord [in His presence] all the days of my life,To gaze upon the beauty [the delightful loveliness and majestic grandeur] of the LordAnd to meditate in His temple.
He keeps all his bones;Not one of them is broken.
I behaved as if grieving for my friend or my brother;I bowed down in mourning, as one who sorrows for his mother.
“Surely every man walks around like a shadow [in a charade];Surely they make an uproar for nothing;Each one builds up riches, not knowing who will receive them.
Many, O Lord my God, are the wonderful works which You have done,And Your thoughts toward us;There is none to compare with You.If I would declare and speak of your wonders,They would be too many to count.
And when one comes to see me, he speaks empty words,While his heart gathers malicious gossip [against me];When he goes away, he tells it [everywhere].
Strap Your sword on Your thigh, O mighty One,In Your splendor and Your majesty!
For the ransom of his soul is too costly,And he should cease trying forever—
Be not afraid when [an ungodly] man becomes rich,When the wealth and glory of his house are increased;
The mighty One, God, the Lord, has spoken,And summoned the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting [from east to west].
Every one of them has turned aside and fallen away;Together they have become filthy and corrupt;There is no one who does good, no, not even one.
For it is not an enemy who taunts me—Then I could bear it;Nor is it one who has hated me who insolently exalts himself against me—Then I could hide from him.
But the king will rejoice in God;Everyone who swears by Him [honoring the true God, acknowledging His authority and majesty] will glory,For the mouths of those who speak lies will be stopped.
They devise acts of injustice, saying,“We are ready with a well-conceived plan.”For the inward thought and the heart of a man are deep (mysterious, unsearchable).
Surely God will shatter the head of His enemies,The hairy scalp of one who goes on in his guilty ways.
May their encampment be desolate;May no one dwell in their tents.
Add [unforgiven] iniquity to their iniquity [in Your book],And may they not come into Your righteousness.
I will also praise You with the harp,Your truth and faithfulness, O my God;To You I will sing praises with the lyre,O Holy One of Israel.
Like a dream [which seems real] until one awakens,O Lord, when stirred, [You observe the wicked], You will despise their image.
But God is the Judge;He puts down one and lifts up another.
Again and again they tempted God,And distressed the Holy One of Israel.
He established it for a testimony in JosephWhen He went throughout the land of Egypt.I heard the language [of One whom] I did not know, saying,
“Nevertheless you will die like menAnd fall like any one of the princes.”
For they have conspired together with one mind;Against You they make a covenant—
[God has said] “I have made a covenant with My chosen one;I have sworn to David My servant,
O Lord God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty Lord?Your faithfulness surrounds You [as an intrinsic, unchangeable part of Your very being].
For our shield belongs to the Lord,And our king to the Holy One of Israel.
Once You spoke in a vision to Your godly ones,And said, “I have given help to one who is mighty [giving him the power to be a champion for Israel];I have exalted one chosen from the people.
Bless and affectionately praise the Lord, O my soul,And do not forget any of His benefits;
Who forgives all your sins,Who heals all your diseases;
[You are the One] who covers Yourself with light as with a garment,Who stretches out the heavens like a tent curtain,
And they wandered from one nation to another,From one kingdom to another people,
He brought the sons of Israel out [of Egypt] with silver and gold,And among their tribes there was not one who stumbled.
And the waters covered their adversaries;Not one of them was left.
They envied Moses in the camp,And Aaron [the high priest], the holy one of the Lord,
Therefore He said He would destroy them,[And He would have done so] had not Moses, His chosen one, stepped into the gap before Him,To turn away His wrath from destroying them.
O God, my heart is steadfast [with confident faith];I will sing, I will sing praises, even with my soul.
The sum of Your word is truth [the full meaning of all Your precepts],And every one of Your righteous ordinances endures forever.
I rejoice at Your word,As one who finds great treasure.
Until I find a place for the Lord,A dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob (Israel).”
The Lord swore to DavidA truth from which He will not turn back:“One of your descendants I will set upon your throne.
For there they who took us captive demanded of us a song with words,And our tormentors [who made a mockery of us demanded] amusement, saying,“Sing us one of the songs of Zion.”
One generation shall praise Your works to another,And shall declare Your mighty and remarkable acts.
