7 A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus told her, "Please give me a drink,"
9 (Now Jesus' disciples had gone away to town to buy some food).
9 Therefore the (M)Samaritan woman *said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For (N)Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
9 “How is it that You, a Jew,(K) ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan(L) woman?” she asked Him. For Jews do not associate with(d) Samaritans.(e)
9 The Samaritan woman asked him, "How can you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" Because Jews do not have anything to do with Samaritans.
10 Therefore, the Samaritan woman asked Him, "Why is it that you, being a Jew, would ask a Samaritan woman [like me] for a drink?" (For Jews do not have any fellowship with Samaritans). [Note: The reason for this stemmed from longstanding religious, cultural and ethnic prejudices].
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you (O)living water.”
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
10 Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God,(M) and who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would ask Him, and He would give you living water.”(N)
10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, "Please give me a drink,' you would have been the one to ask him, and he would have given you living water."
11 Jesus answered her, "If you [only] knew the [real] gift of God, and who it is that said to you, '[Please], give me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."
11 She *said to Him, “(b)Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that (P)living water?
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
11 “Sir,”(O) said the woman, “You don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do You get this ‘living water’?
11 The woman told him, "Sir, you don't have a bucket, and the well is deep. Where are you going to get this living water?
12 The woman [then] said to Him, "Sir, you do not have anything to draw [water] with, and the well is deep. Where will you get that living water?
12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who (Q)gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?”
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
12 You aren’t greater than our father Jacob,(P) are You? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock.”
12 You're not greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it, along with his sons and his flocks, are you?"

13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again;
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
13 Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again.
13 Jesus answered her, "Everyone who drinks this water will become thirsty again.
14 Are you greater than our forefather Jacob, who gave us this well? He himself and his sons and cattle [all] drank from it."
14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him (R)shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to (S)eternal life.”
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
14 But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again—ever!(Q) In fact, the water I will give him will become a well(f)(R) of water springing up within him for eternal life.”(S)
14 But whoever drinks the water that I will give him will never become thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become a well of water for him, springing up to eternal life."
15 Jesus answered her, "Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again,
15 The woman *said to Him, “(c)Sir, (T)give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.”
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
15 “Sir,” the woman said to Him, “give me this water so I won’t get thirsty and come here to draw water.”
15 The woman told him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I won't get thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water."
16 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never get thirsty [again]. For the water I will give him will become in him [i.e., in his spirit] a spring of water, bubbling up and producing never ending life." [See John 7:38].
16 He *said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.”
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
16 “Go call your husband,” He told her, “and come back here.”
16 He told her, "Go and call your husband, and come back here."
17 The woman [then] said to Him, "Sir, [please] give me [some of] that water, so that I do not get thirsty [again], or have to come all the way here to draw [water]."
17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’;
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
17 “I don’t have a husband,” she answered.“You have correctly said, ‘I don’t have a husband,’” Jesus said.
17 The woman answered him, "I don't have a husband."
18 Jesus replied to her, "Go call your husband and [then] come here."
18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.”
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
18 “For you’ve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”
18 Jesus told her, "You are quite right in saying, "I don't have a husband,' because you have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true."
19 The woman said to Him, "I do not have a husband." Jesus said to her, "You were right when you said, 'I do not have a husband,'
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
19 “Sir,” the woman replied, “I see that You are a prophet.
19 The woman told him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet!
20 because you have had five husbands, and the man you are now living with is not [really] your husband. So, you have told the truth."
20 (V)Our fathers worshiped in (W)this mountain, and you people say that (X)in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.”
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain,(g)(T) yet you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.”(U)
20 Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain. But you Jews say that the place where people should worship is in Jerusalem."
21 [Then] the woman said to Jesus, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.
21 Jesus *said to her, “Woman, believe Me, (Y)an hour is coming when (Z)neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
21 Jesus told her, “Believe Me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
21 Jesus told her, "Believe me, dear lady, the hour is coming when you Samaritans will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
22 Our forefathers worshiped on this mountain [i.e., Mt. Gerizim, which was visible from where they were sitting]; but you say that Jerusalem is the place where people should worship [God]."
22 (AA)You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for (AB)salvation is from the Jews.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
22 You Samaritans(h) worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.(V)
22 You don't know what you're worshiping. We Jews know what we're worshiping, because salvation comes from the Jews.
23 miles away from Cana].
23 But (AC)an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father (AD)in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
23 But an hour is coming, and is now here,(W) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship Him.
23 Yet the time is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. Indeed, the Father is looking for people like that to worship him.
24 Jesus replied to her, "[My dear] woman, believe me [when I tell you], the time will come when you people will not worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."
25 You [Samaritans] do not [really] know what you worship; we [Jews] know what we worship because salvation is from the Jews [i.e., through Jewish prophets, Jewish Scriptures and a Jewish Messiah].
25 The woman *said to Him, “I know that (AF)Messiah is coming ((AG)He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.”
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah(i)(Z) is coming” (who is called Christ(AA)). “When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”
25 The woman told him, "I know that the Anointed One is coming, who is being called "the Messiah'. When that person comes, he will explain everything."
26 But the time will come, and is now [actually] here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit [i.e., from the heart] and truth [i.e., according to God's revealed will], for these are the people whom the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
26 "I am he," Jesus replied, "the one who is speaking to you."
27 God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."
27 At this point His (AI)disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?”
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
27 Just then His disciples arrived, and they were amazed that He was talking with a woman. Yet no one said, “What do You want?” or “Why are You talking with her?”
27 At this point his disciples arrived, and they were astonished that he was talking to a woman. Yet no one said, "What do you want from her?" or, "Why are you talking to her?"
28 [Then] the woman said to Jesus, "I know that Messiah is coming ([He is] the One who is called Christ). And when He does come, He will tell us everything."
28 So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and *said to the men,
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
28 Then the woman left her water jar, went into town, and told the men,
28 Then the woman left her water jar and went back to town. She told people,
29 Jesus replied to her, "I, who am speaking to you, am [the Messiah]."
29 “Come, see a man (AJ)who told me all the things that I have done; (AK)this is not (f)the Christ, is it?”
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
29 "Come, see a man who told me everything I've ever done! Could he possibly be the Messiah?"
30 Just about then Jesus' disciples returned [from town], and were surprised to find Him talking with a woman. [Note: It was not customary for a Jewish male to engage a woman in extended conversation in that day, much less a stranger, and certainly not a Samaritan], yet no one said [to Him], "What are you looking for?" or "Why are you talking to her?"
30 They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.
30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
30 The people left the town and started on their way to him.
32 "Come [and] see a man who told me everything I ever did. Can this be the Christ?"
32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”
32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
32 But He said, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.”
32 But he told them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about."
33 [So], the people went out from the town and came to where Jesus was.
33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
33 The disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought Him something to eat?”
33 So the disciples began to say to one another, "No one has brought him anything to eat, have they?"
34 Meanwhile Jesus' disciples urged Him, saying, "Rabbi, [have something to] eat."
34 Jesus *said to them, “My food is to (AN)do the will of Him who sent Me and to (AO)accomplish His work.
34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
34 “My food is to do the will of Him(AF) who sent Me(AG) and to finish His work,”(AH) Jesus told them.
34 Jesus told them, "My food is doing the will of the one who sent me and completing his work.
35 But He said to them, "I [already] have food to eat that you do not know about."
35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white (AP)for harvest.
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
35 “Don’t you say, ‘There are still four more months, then comes the harvest’? Listen to what I’m telling you: Open(j) your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ready(k) for harvest.
35 You say, don't you, "In four more months the harvest will begin?' Look, I tell you, open your eyes and observe that the fields are ready for harvesting now!
36 So, the disciples said to one another, "No one has brought Him anything to eat [have they]?"
36 Already he who reaps is receiving (AQ)wages and is gathering (AR)fruit for (AS)life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.
36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
36 The reaper is already receiving pay and gathering fruit for eternal life,(AI) so the sower and reaper can rejoice together.
36 The one who harvests is already receiving his wages and gathering a crop for eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who harvests may rejoice together.
38 Are you not [always] saying, 'There are still four months before harvest time comes'? Look, I am telling you [disciples], lift up your eyes and look at the fields, that they are white and ripe for harvest [i.e., people are ready to make a spiritual response].
38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.”
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.
38 I sent you to reap what you didn’t labor for; others have labored, and you have benefited from(l) their labor.”
38 I have sent you to harvest what you have not worked for. Others have worked, and you have adopted their work as your own."
39 Already the person who is harvesting [the crop] is being paid for his work, and is gathering a crop for never ending life, so that the one planting and the one harvesting [the crop] may rejoice together.
39 From (AU)that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “(AV)He told me all the things that I have done.”
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
39 Now many Samaritans(AK) from that town believed in Him because of what the woman said(m) when she testified,(AL) “He told me everything I ever did.”
39 Now many of the Samaritans of that town believed in Jesus because the woman had testified, "He told me everything I've ever done."
40 So, the saying is true that one person plants and another harvests [the crop].
40 So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.
40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.

42 Then many Samaritans from Sychar believed in Jesus because of the testimony of the woman, who said, "He told me everything that I ever did."
42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed (AW)the Savior of the world.”
42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
42 And they told the woman, “We no longer believe because of what you said, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this really is the Savior(AN) of the world.”(o)
42 They kept telling the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, because now we have heard him ourselves, and we know that he really is the Savior of the world."
45 and they said to the woman, "Now we believe, not just because of what you said, but because we have heard [it] for ourselves and know that this is truly the Savior of the world."
45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, (AZ)having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.
45 Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
45 When(AR) they entered Galilee, the Galileans(AS) welcomed Him because they had seen everything He did in Jerusalem(AT) during the festival.(AU) For they also had gone to the festival.
45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him because they had seen everything that he had done in Jerusalem during the festival and because they, too, had gone to the festival.
46 Two days later Jesus left Sychar and went to Galilee.
46 Therefore He came again to (BA)Cana of Galilee (BB)where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at (BC)Capernaum.
46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.

46 So Jesus returned to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. Meanwhile, in Capernaum there was a government official whose son was ill.
47 For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet does not receive honor in his own country. [Note: Jesus' reference here to his "own country" means Judea, while in Matt., Mark and Luke it refers to Nazareth].
47 When he heard that Jesus had come (BD)out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.
47 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea(AX) into Galilee, he went to Him and pleaded with Him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.

48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
48 Jesus told him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe."
49 Then Jesus returned again to Cana, in Galilee, where He had turned water into wine. There was a government official there whose son was sick at Capernaum [Note: Capernaum was about
49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
49 The official told him, "Sir, please come down before my little boy dies."
50 When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to Him and begged Him to come down [to Capernaum] and heal his son who was about to die.
50 Jesus *said to him, “(BG)Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off.
50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
50 “Go,” Jesus told him, “your son will live.” The man believed what(p) Jesus said to him and departed.
50 Jesus told him, "Go home. Your son will live." The man believed what Jesus told him and started back home.
51 So, Jesus said to him, "None of you people will believe [in me] unless you see [miraculous] signs and wonders, [will you?]."
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.
51 While he was still going down, his slaves met him saying that his boy was alive.
51 While he was on his way, his servants met him and told him that his child was alive.
52 The government official replied, "Sir, [please] come down [to Capernaum] before my child dies."
52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the (j)seventh hour the fever left him.”
52 Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
52 He asked them at what time he got better. “Yesterday at seven in the morning(q) the fever left him,” they answered.
52 So he asked them at what hour he had begun to recover, and they told him, "The fever left him yesterday at one o'clock in the afternoon."
53 Jesus said to him, "Go on [home]; your son will live." And the man believed what Jesus said to him and went [home].
53 So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives”; and he himself believed and (BH)his whole household.
53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
53 The father(BB) realized this was the very hour at which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” Then he himself believed, along with his whole household.
53 Then the father realized that this was the very hour when Jesus had told him, "Your son will live." So he himself believed, along with his whole family.
54 While he was going along, his slaves met him and told him that his son was [still] alive.
54 This is again a (BI)second (k)sign that Jesus performed when He had (BJ)come out of Judea into Galilee.

56 So [then], the father realized that it was at that [exact] hour that Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So, he and his entire family believed [in Jesus].
