'Away' in the Bible
The wicked [those who live in disobedience to God’s law] are not so,But they are like the chaff [worthless and without substance] which the wind blows away.
Have mercy on me and be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am weak (faint, frail);Heal me, O Lord, for my bones are dismayed and anguished.
So that my enemy will not tear me like a lion,Dragging me away while there is no one to rescue [me].
For all His ordinances were before me,And I did not put away His statutes from me.
Do not sweep my soul away with sinners,Nor [sweep away] my life with men of bloodshed,
Do not hide Your face from me,Do not turn Your servant away in anger; You have been my help;Do not abandon me nor leave me,O God of my salvation!
Do not drag me away with the wickedAnd with those who do evil,Who speak peace with their neighbors,While malice and mischief are in their hearts.
For my life is spent with sorrowAnd my years with sighing; My strength has failed because of my iniquity,And even my body has wasted away.
When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted awayThrough my groaning all the day long.
All my bones will say, “Lord, who is like You,Who rescues the afflicted from him who is too strong for him [to resist alone],And the afflicted and the needy from him who robs him?”
Do not let the foot of the proud [person] overtake me,And do not let the hand of the wicked drive me away.
But the wicked (ungodly) will perish,And the enemies of the Lord will be like the glory of the pastures and like the fat of lambs [that is consumed in smoke],They vanish—like smoke they vanish away.
Yet he passed away, and lo, he was no more;I sought him, but he could not be found.
I was mute and silent [before my enemies],I refrained even from good,And my distress grew worse.
“Remove Your plague from me;I am wasting away because of the conflict and opposition of Your hand.
“With rebukes You discipline man for sin;You consume like a moth what is precious to him;Surely every man is a mere breath [a wisp of smoke, a vapor that vanishes]. Selah.
“O look away from me, that I may smile and again know joyBefore I depart and am no more.”
I have not concealed Your righteousness within my heart;I have proclaimed Your faithfulness and Your salvation.I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great assembly.
And when one comes to see me, he speaks empty words,While his heart gathers malicious gossip [against me];When he goes away, he tells it [everywhere].
For, lo, the kings assembled themselves,They [came and] passed by together.
For when he dies he will carry nothing away; His glory will not descend after him.
Do not cast me away from Your presenceAnd do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Every one of them has turned aside and fallen away;Together they have become filthy and corrupt; There is no one who does good, no, not even one.
And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!I would fly away and be at rest.
“I would wander far away,I would lodge in the [peace of the] wilderness. Selah.
Let them flow away like water that runs off; When he aims his arrows, let them be as headless shafts.
Let them be as a snail which melts away (secretes slime) as it goes along,Like the miscarriage of a woman which never sees the sun.
Before your cooking pots can feel the fire of thorns [burning under them as fuel],He will sweep them away with a whirlwind, the green and the burning ones alike.
So they will be caused to stumble;Their own tongue is against them; All who gaze at them will shake the head [in scorn].
Wickedness and guilt prevail against me;Yet as for our transgressions,You forgive them [removing them from Your sight].
Let the peoples praise You, O God;Let all the peoples praise You.
Let the peoples praise You, O God;Let all the peoples praise You.
As smoke is driven away, so drive them away;As wax melts before the fire,So let the wicked and guilty perish before [the presence of] God.
You have ascended on high, You have led away captive Your captives; You have received gifts among men,Even from the rebellious also, that the Lord God may dwell there.
Do not cast me off nor send me away in the time of old age;Do not abandon me when my strength fails and I am weak.
Your way, O God, is holy [far from sin and guilt].What god is great like our God?
But He, the source of compassion and lovingkindness, forgave their wickedness and did not destroy them; Many times He restrained His angerAnd did not stir up all His wrath.
Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name;Rescue us, forgive us our sins for Your name’s sake.
You have forgiven the wickedness of Your people; You have covered all their sin. Selah.
You have withdrawn all Your wrath,You have turned away from Your burning anger.
For You, O Lord, are good, and ready to forgive [our sins, sending them away, completely letting them go forever and ever];And abundant in lovingkindness and overflowing in mercy to all those who call upon You.
Cast away [from the living] and abandoned among the dead,Like the slain who lie in a [nameless] grave,Whom You no longer remember,And they are cut off from Your hand.
You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep [forgotten as soon as they are gone];In the morning they are like grass which grows anew—
For we have been consumed by Your angerAnd by Your wrath we have been terrified.
For all our days pass away in Your wrath; We have finished our years like a whispered sigh.
The days of our life are seventy years—Or even, if because of strength, eighty years;Yet their pride [in additional years] is only labor and sorrow,For it is soon gone and we fly away.
For my days have vanished in smoke,And my bones have been scorched like a hearth.
Because of Your indignation and Your wrath,For You have lifted me up and thrown me away.
I said, “O my God, do not take me away in the midst of my days;Your years are [eternal] throughout all generations.
“Even they will perish, but You endure;Yes, all of them will wear out like a garment.Like clothing You will change them and they shall be changed.
At Your rebuke they fled;At the sound of Your thunder they hurried away.
You hide Your face, they are dismayed; You take away their breath, they dieAnd return to their dust.
Therefore He said He would destroy them,[And He would have done so] had not Moses, His chosen one, stepped into the gap before Him,To turn away His wrath from destroying them.
He also made them objects of compassionAmong those who had carried them away captive.
They went up toward the heavens [on the crest of the wave], they went down again to the depths [of the watery trough];Their courage melted away in their misery.
Take reproach and contempt away from me,For I observe Your testimonies.
My soul dissolves because of grief;Renew and strengthen me according to [the promises of] Your word.
Turn my eyes away from vanity [all those worldly, meaningless things that distract—let Your priorities be mine],And restore me [with renewed energy] in Your ways.
Turn away my reproach which I dread,For Your ordinances are good.
You have removed all the wicked of the earth like dross [for they have no value];Therefore I love Your testimonies.
Then the waters would have engulfed us,The torrent would have swept over our soul;
For the sake of Your servant David,Do not turn away the face of Your anointed.
Man is like a mere breath; His days are like a shadow that passes away.
He has also established them forever and ever;He has made a decree which shall not pass away.
